Description

Oceans & Range: All tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide. In the Pacific, found from Southern California to Peru and throughout the Central Pacific to Hawaii and beyond. In the Atlantic, from New Jersey south through the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico to Brazil. A pelagic, schooling species often associated with floating debris, FADs (fish aggregating devices), and offshore structure.

Preferred Water Temperature: 70°F–84°F. A warm-water open ocean species found near the surface in blue water. Frequently encountered when targeting Mahi-Mahi and Yellowfin Tuna around floating debris and FADs.

Size & Weight: Typically 5–15 lbs and 2–3 feet. Maximum approximately 30 lbs. Named for the vivid iridescent blue-green back and yellow lateral stripes. One of the best-tasting fish in the ocean — highly prized as table fare throughout the Pacific Islands.

Best Lures: Small to medium skirted trolling lures produce strikes. Casting chrome jigs into schools is very effective. Small poppers and stick baits produce surface strikes. Small feather jigs trolled at moderate speed work well.

Best Baits: Small live baitfish are excellent. Small squid pieces work consistently. Fresh cut fish produce strikes. Small whole anchovies and sardines are top baits. Rainbow Runner are also used as live bait for larger pelagics including Marlin and Sailfish.
