Description

Oceans & Range: All tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide — one of the most abundant tuna species on Earth. Found in the Pacific from Southern California to Chile, throughout the Hawaiian Islands, and across the entire Indo-Pacific. Atlantic populations range from New England to Argentina. Highly schooling; often found mixed with Yellowfin Tuna and under feeding marine mammals and birds.

Preferred Water Temperature: 65°F–82°F. Prefers warm surface waters; concentrates at fronts and edges between water masses where baitfish aggregate.

Size & Weight: Typically 3–12 lbs. Maximum size approximately 40 lbs. World record: 45 lbs 4 oz. Exceptional fighters on light tackle due to speed and endurance. One of the primary target species for the global tuna canning industry — the "light meat" tuna sold commercially.

Best Lures: Small feather jigs and cedar plugs trolled at 6–8 knots produce rapid strikes. Casting chrome or metallic spoons and jigs into surface schools is exciting fast action. Small poppers produce in frenzied feeding conditions. Feather jigs (2–4 inch) on daisy chains are very productive when trolling. Small Rapala minnows and other hard-body lures work when schools are actively feeding near the surface.

Best Baits: Live anchovies and small sardines are the top bait — very easy to get Skipjack to bite live bait when located. Small squid are excellent. Cut chunks of squid produce consistent action. Skipjack Tuna are outstanding live bait for large Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin, and Sailfish — a medium-sized live Skipjack is arguably the best Blue Marlin bait in the world.
